For most of us, work is not our happy place. With that in mind, we asked interior-design pro Nate Berkus to give us his best office-decorating tips. (He even gave some lucky Allure editors office makeovers—more on that here and here!) Here, three of Berkus’s tips you can use to make the most of your office (or cubicle or desk), no matter how tiny it is.
What tips do you have for making a small workspace feel more comfortable? “Clear out the clutter! It’s so important when it comes to your workspace. Have an in-tray and an outbox. Use containers, baskets with lids, file folders—things that look good but are also functional. Organization is key.”
Is there a way to use the space under your desk efficiently? “A deep basket under your desk can be a great catch-all for all kinds of things. Magazines, shoes, beauty samples. Things you don’t need to reach for all the time but that you need to have on hand.”
What will make your workspace more inviting? “You spend so much of your life at work—take the time to personalize it. Think framed photos or a piece of art that you love. Pick up flowers once a week from your local deli, and put them in a gold vase. Use beautiful containers for your pens, your paperwork?like a vintage juice glass or a brass bowl. I want people to live beautifully, even at the office.”
